Amateur field
finally complete
It took longer than it was supposed to but the 120-player field is established for the Manitoba Men’s Amateur Golf Championship next month at Breezy Bend.
Three qualifiers conducted by Golf Manitoba are complete, though two were disrupted in a major way by weather and soggy conditions.
Brett Boschman led the way at Oak Island Golf Club as the western Manitoba window to the amateur dodged most of the raindrops.
Events closer to Winnipeg weren’t so fortunate.
The first qualifying round at South Interlake in Warren was only partially complete and had to be finished five days later. Daley Peters was the eventual winner there, taking the best of 41 spots.
The other round scheduled for South Interlake had to be moved to Carman a week later. Kevin Giesbrecht, playing on his home track, shared low-qualifier status with Justin Ford and Alex Crawford, leading a pack of 36 who advanced.
Garth Collings, the oldest-ever Manitoba Am winner, will be the defending champ on his home course when the action starts July 19.
— The only competitive amateur event that’s in a holding pattern as of today is the Manitoba junior bantam event that was weathered-out at Tuxedo.
The 18 competitors will be advised of a likely August reschedule, GM executive director Dave Comaskey said.
“We have some flexibility there but whatever date we pick probably won’t work for everyone,” he said. “We’ll do the best we can to make sure it’s played.”
— Now that our vacation break is over, belated cap-tipping to Dave Lavallee of Quarry Oaks, the winner of the Manitoba Assistant Professionals Championship at Niakwa, to Kathryn McKenzie of St. Boniface for outlasting the elements at the Women’s City and District Championship at Kingswood, and to Carman head pro Dean North for his two-under 69 Monday at Transcona to win the MPGA’s Callaway Open.
