SCORES were markedly higher for Round 2 but Transcona’s Mike Berney carries the target on his back — or maybe on his patented plus-4s — for today’s final 18 holes of the Manitoba Senior men’s championship at Glendale.

Berney struggled to a six-over 78 Thursday to post a two-day total of 149, five-over-par.

That was good enough for a one-shot lead over three-time defending champion Don Jackson of Portage, an advantage that might have been healthier had it not been for Berney’s double-bogey six at the par-4 18th.

The leader, who shot 71 on Tuesday, also had five bogeys on Wednesday against only one birdie.

Jackson, who had his own struggles Wednesday with five bogeys against only one birdie, posted the day’s best score of 76 to gain some ground.

Third after two days is St. Charles’s Ken Mould, who’s at nine-over after a 79.

Former Manitoba Amateur champion Gary Kullman of Rossmere was tied for fourth at 10-over, with Willow Park’s Jack McDiarmid.

Play was interrupted mid-round on Wednesday to wait out a lightning storm that passed over the city.
