IT was back to business for Juli Inkster Monday morning at St. Charles.
Playing nine, practising and signing autographs with a big smile, it was hard to tell the golf catastrophe she encountered Saturday in North Plains, Ore., during the third round of the LPGA Tour’s Safeway Classic.
There, Inkster was disqualified for using a weighted donut on one of her irons while trying to loosen up during a long delay at the 10th tee. Worse, she was ratted out by a TV viewer who notified tournament officials.
Inkster’s disappointment wasn’t just about money — she was only two behind Ai Miyazato after a 67, and would surely have been in Sunday’s final four — but also about losing a chance for a 32nd career victory.
"I don’t understand it," the LPGA Hall of Famer said about her disqualification. "It’s a pretty severe penalty when it didn’t have anything to do with any part of my golf game.
"I don’t really get it. It’s tough. I played so well."
The incident appeared to be behind her on Monday. Inkster was out early on St. Charles’ Ross Nine (this week’s back nine) and then spent some time working on her game.
"It’s a good golf course," she said. "You’ve got to drive it well and the rough is up.
"CN does a great job and this is a first-rate tournament. We all treat it like a major."
Inkster, a huge Bay Area (California) sports fan, said she did not go to the Pumpkin Ridge course nor watch any of Miyazato’s fifth win of the season at Sunday’s final round of the Safeway Classic. "No, watched the Giants lose 9-0 and then I watched the 49ers play," she smiled.
