Juniors come down to the wire

One leader kept her position and the other slumped to second at the Manitoba Men’s and Women’s Junior Golf Championships at Elmhurst Golf and Country Club.

Travis Fredborg of Selkirk Golf and Country Club fell to a second-place tie after finishing the third of four rounds. Fredborg led the competition after the first two rounds at his home club, but struggled with a 10 over par yesterday. He’s tied with Elmhurst’s Zach Sackett at four over par in the championship.

“It was very disappointing, but I can’t let it bother me though. I’ve got to come back and shoot a good one tomorrow,” Fredborg said. “It was a lack of concentration on my part. I made some bad mental errors and I’ve got to shake them off for tomorrow.”

Fredborg will be paired with Sackett and St. Charles’ Steven Young for the final round. Young shot seven over par today but leads the pack with 216 strokes. Fredborg and Sackett are on his tails with 217.

Last year Fredborg finished second overall at the provincial championship. This year he will have another chance to clinch the title.

“I just go in and try and do my best. I can’t worry about what other people do and I just need to focus on my game and whatever happens, happens.”

He is hoping for a quicker start to his game during the final round. He bogeyed the first three holes and triple bogeyed the par four seventh. Fredborg straightened out his game on the par-three eighth hole with a birdie.

Dana Todd of St. Charles was the runner up for the 2012 Manitoba Junior Girls Championship. This year she has set excellent pace in hopes of picking up her first provincial championship.

Todd shot a plus-four 77 at Elmhurst today. She leads the pack with 151 strokes. Following her path is Veronica Vetesnik who shot the same 77 Thursday, but is still behind five strokes with a score of 156.

“I thought I played pretty well. I hit the ball well but I struggled with putting especially on the back nine,” Todd said. “But the greens have been more difficult here compared to Selkirk. So I was happy overall but I could have done better.”

Todd’s most difficult stretch was from the 13th to 15th holes. She had two bogeys and a double bogey. However, Todd also finished with birdies on par-three, par-four and par-five holes earlier in the game.

The women will complete their third and final round today at Elmhurst. Todd will be paired with Vetesnik and Alexandra Demko.
