The nine Canadians in the field for this week’s Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego mark the most since 1970 for a PGA Tour event outside Canada.
Jared du Toit of Kimberley, B.C. and Maxwell Sear of Markham qualified Monday and will join seven countrymen, starting Wednesday at Torrey Pines. For the 26-year-old du Toit, it’s the second year in a row that he’s qualified for this tournament. He shot 1-over after 36 holes last year and missed the cut. His career highlight was a magical run at the 2016 RBC Canadian Open when, as an amateur, he played in the final group on Sunday and ended up tied for ninth.
This will be Sear’s PGA Tour debut. Both Canadians shot 4-under in qualifying, good for two of four available spots.
A PGA Tour spokesperson confirmed that nine Canadians will be the most for any event — outside of the Canadian Open — in more than 50 years. The others teeing it up this week are Adam Hadwin, Mackenzie Hughes, Nick Taylor, Corey Conners, Adam Svensson, Michael Gligic and Taylor Pendrith.
Eight Canadians have made a non-Canadian Open field nine times, all in the last three years.
The Farmers Insurance Open ends Saturday to avoid going up against Sunday’s NFL conference championships.
