Kartusch hangs on to claim city and district crown

A turbulent back-nine wasn’t enough to crash Addison Kartusch’s bid for the women’s city and district golf crown on Friday.

The Winnipeg teen out of St. Charles breezed through her opening nine at Selkirk Golf and Country Club then hung on for dear life to card a 3-over 74 — 4-over total on the two-day tournament — and edge India Young by two strokes.

Kartusch’s lead, which started at three strokes to begin the day, grew to as many as five shots after a 1-under front nine that included three birdies. Charmaine Hayden, a three-time champion at the event and the biggest threat to the youngster heading into Friday, never found her scoring touch on this day, carding a 4-over 76 to finish alone in third.

Young, who began the day four shots back of Kartusch, played the steadiest golf among the final group, finishing at 6-over on the tournament for a solo hold on second place.

It’s Kartusch’s second win of the summer. She won Golf Manitoba’s women’s match-play championship to open the season.

Meanwhile, the U15 championship also wrapped up on Friday and saw Glendale’s Gavin Carver mount a two-stroke comeback to begin the day and win the junior boy’s event by four shots. Maisy Shewchuk continued her strong play for a second-consecutive day to run away with the women’s U15 title while Ryder St. Laurent took home the honours for the 12-and-under boys.
