THE daughter of former NHL player and one-time Montreal Canadiens captain Pierre Turgeon was killed in a highway crash in New Mexico on Thursday, police said in a release.

Elizabeth Turgeon, 18, died in the collision when the vehicle she was driving hit a transport truck near Vaughn, New Mexico, about 100 kilometres southeast of Santa Fe.

An 18-year-old passenger in the vehicle, Brittany Kraemer of El Paso, Texas, was in critical condition in a New Mexico hospital, police said.

An officer at the Vaughn police station said Turgeon failed to stop at an intersection, then crashed into the trailer of a semi being driven by Kenneth Bevers, 51, who was uninjured.

Police said dense fog was also a contributing factor in the crash.

Pierre Turgeon retired from the NHL in 2007 after a 19-year career, during which he played for the Canadiens, Buffalo Sabres, New York Islanders, Dallas Stars, St. Louis Blues and Colorado Avalanche.

News of his daughter’s death was announced during the telecast of the Avalanche-Minnesota Wild game Thursday evening, TheDenverChannel.com said.

It also said Turgeon was a 2010 graduate of Valor Christian High School in Highlands Ranch.

Turgeon was signed by the University of Minnesota women’s hockey team last year, according to the team’s website.
