THE Winnipeg Thrashers are headed to the 2011 Telus Cup thanks to a 4-1 win over the Prince Albert Mintos at the Western Regional final in Moose Jaw Sunday.

“We started getting contributions from everyone early in the season,” head coach Dan Eliasson said via phone, on when he knew he had a special group of players. “We weren’t sure how deep talent-wise we were going to be, but guys started pitching in. We have 18 skaters and two goaltenders — that’s why I think we’re in this spot now.”

The Manitoba AAA midget hockey league champs, undefeated in four games at the qualifier, got first-period goals from Morgan Wincher and Sean Collins to erase a one-goal deficit. Rory Court and Regan Stire added insurance goals in the second and third periods. Goaltender Teagan Sacher made 27 saves, holding steady under frantic Mintos pressure in the third to preserve the win and give the Thrashers a third trip to the national championship in the last four seasons. The Telus Cup runs April 18-24 in St. John’s, Nfld.
