OTTAWA – Kayle Osborne earned a 28-save shutout, Taylor Girard had a hat trick and the New York Sirens opened their season with a 4-0 win over the Ottawa Charge on Saturday in Professional Women’s Hockey League action.

Osborne took the No. 1 role after longtime starter Corinne Schroeder signed with the Seattle Torrent, one of two expansion teams to join the PWHL this season.

Saturday’s shutout was the second of Osborne’s PWHL career, the first also coming against Ottawa in a 3-0 win last season.

Maja Nylen Persson, with an empty-netter, also scored for New York (1-0-0-0). All four goals were scored in the final 12:11 of the contest.

Gwyneth Philips stopped 38 shots for Ottawa (0-0-0-1).

The Sirens broke the silence with just over 12 minutes to play, finally forcing a goal past Philips. After turning away Maddi Wheeler, then stopping Girard’s initial follow-up, the second rebound finally snuck under Philips after 28 straight saves.

Looking to respond, Charge forward Rebecca Leslie’s saucer pass sprung Taylor House on a breakaway, where Osborne stuffed the chance.

Girard struck again with 6:21 to go, on a pass from Wheeler from behind the Ottawa net that left Girard to shoot into an empty cage. Girard netted her third goal three minutes later.

Takeaways

Charge: While scoring still looks sparse, Philips’s playoff MVP-winning post-season run was no fluke.

Sirens: A young forward core of Sarah Fillier, Kristyna Kaltounkova and Casey O’Brien will make the Sirens an offensive threat every game this season as they look for their first playoff berth.

Key moment

Girard finally broke through Philips, forcing in a second rebound off Wheeler’s initial breakaway chance.

Key stat

Osborne stopped all 28 shots against.

Up next

Sirens: On the road against Montréal Victoire Tuesday.

Charge: Host the Vancouver Goldeneyes on Wednesday.
