MONTREAL – Zachary Bolduc scored the game-deciding goal in the sixth round of Saturday’s shootout as the Montreal Canadiens edged the Detroit Red Wings 1-0 in a goaltenders’ battle at the Bell Centre.

Montreal (2-2-1) snapped a three-game losing streak, winning for the first time on home ice in three outings this season.

Detroit (1-3-1), playing in its first road game of the season, dropped its second game in as many nights after also falling 6-3 to the Seattle Kraken on Friday.

Daniil Tarasov made 30 saves for the Red Wings in his 100th career NHL game. The Russian netminder was making his first start with the Red Wings since signing as a free agent with Detroit on July 1.

Jacob Fowler also stopped 30 shots for Montreal in his second career shutout for the Canadiens. The 21-year-old was making his second straight start for Montreal after being recalled from the Laval Rocket of the American Hockey League on Wednesday.

The Melbourne, Fla. native, who allowed three goals on 18 shots in Thursday’s loss to the Nashville Predators, is replacing Samuel Montembeault who is expected to be sidelined for 10 to 14 days with a lower-body injury sustained during Wednesday’s team practice.

In addition to cheering on the home team, Canadiens fans spent much of the game showing their appreciation for Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin. The crowd repeatedly broke into chants of “We want Larkin,” seemingly hoping to persuade the American to make Montreal his next destination.

The former Red Wings captain requested a trade out of Detroit this past off-season, but has shown little interest in joining Montreal or any other Canadian team.

TAKEAWAYS

Red Wings: Detroit was blanked for the second time in five games to start the season. The Red Wings are averaging just two goals per game.

Canadiens: Montreal’s power-play woes continued to start the season as the Canadiens failed to convert on all four of their man-advantage opportunities. It dropped the Canadiens to a paltry 1-for-17 (5.9 per cent) on the season.

KEY MOMENT

Montreal had three goals overturned by officials. Cole Caufield’s shot 1:16 into the game was ultimately deemed not to have crossed the goal line, while Bolduc’s second-period goal was disallowed due to goaltender interference by Jake Evans on Tarasov. A third Montreal goal, meanwhile, this one courtesy of Alexandre Texier, was called back for offside midway through overtime.

KEY STAT

Caufield was held scoreless on a Saturday night. He leads the NHL with 36 goals scored on Saturdays since the start of the 2024-25 season.

UP NEXT

Red Wings: Host the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.

Canadiens: Host the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday.
