THE Winnipeg Jets announced Thursday that their prospects will compete against four other NHL teams at a prospects tournament in Penticton, B.C. in September.
The Jets, Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks will play in the five-day Vancouver Canucks Young Stars Tournament prior to the start of official training camp.
Jets prospects will play San Jose on Sept. 12, Edmonton on Sept. 13 and Vancouver on Sept. 15.
The Jets said they expect recent draft choices Mark Scheifele, Adam Lowry, Zachery Yuen and Austen Brassard all to play in the tourney.
“It’ll be a great opportunity for our organization to see all our young players, the majority of them, playing for the first time for us,” GM Kevin Cheveldayoff said Thursday. “They’re exciting tournaments to be part of because it is a snapshot of the future.”
Bogo, Wheeler on radar
CHEVELDAYOFF said Thursday he continues to work on the files of restricted free agents defenceman Zach Bogosian and forward Blake Wheeler, who has filed for salary arbitration. Hearings begin July 20.
AHL honours Chipman
TEN years in a hockey league is not a long time but the AHL recognized True North chairman Mark Chipman this week with the Thomas Ebright Award for his career contributions to the league.
The True North chairman was a key member of a small committee that brought about the 2001 merger deal that brought the Moose to the AHL and helped the league flourish into the 30-team circuit it is today.
Chevy shops carefully
With the possible exception of Andrew Ladd’s five-year contract for $22 million earlier this week, Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff has not been throwing around years at free agents since taking over here.
He hinted Thursday there’s lots to think about on that front, especially considering the NHL’s labour agreement with its players expires at the end of the upcoming season.
“I think you have to be cognizant of money and term moving forward in a lot of different cases…
“I think the worst thing you can do, though, is make a mistake now for the long-term. You do have to think about those kinds of things.”
