FOUR skaters with the Manitoba Moose will morph into members of the new AHL franchise in St. John’s, N.L., as the Winnipeg Jets announced several signings Wednesday.
Centre Marco Rosa, wingers Kevin Clark and Shawn Weller and defenceman Travis Ramsey have all agreed to AHL contracts with the St. John’s team, which will be the top affiliate of the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets.
Rosa, 29, led the Moose in scoring during the Calder Cup playoffs in 2011, recording 17 points in two rounds. His return from a serious knee injury last season saw him play his best-ever hockey for the Moose over two seasons with the team.
Clark, a Winnipegger, just finished his first full year of pro hockey. Now, 23, he had six points in 11 playoff games in 2011. He played NCAA hockey for the University of Alaska-Anchorage.
Weller was signed by the Moose last fall and contributed 12 goals and 23 assists in 67 AHL games.
Ramsey is a former Maine Black Bears captain and has spent his entire pro career with the Moose. He scored 12 assists in 57 games last season.
Also signed to AHL contracts with St. John’s were Michael Kirkpatrick, Shayne Wiebe and John Albert.
Kirkpatrick was a member of the St. John Sea Dogs last season and helped the team capture the Memorial Cup. The 21-year-old centre scored 251 points in four QMJHL seasons with St. John.
Wiebe, also 21, was the captain of the Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings last season and had 44 goals in 72 games.
He played briefly for the Connecticut Whale of the AHL last spring on a tryout after the Wheat Kings’ season was finished.
Albert, 22, had 34 points in 37 games for the Ohio State Buckeyes in NCAA hockey last season.
He’s a sixth-round draft pick of the Atlanta Thrashers from 2007.
