Big Picture In the big picture of camp, it's not entirely a revelation that numerous Jets prospects and depth players in this game, not to mention a few veterans, were collectively not a match for the mostly Hurricanes A-roster. But a theme through three road games in the pre-season has been a less than pretty scene in Winnipeg's defensive zone.

Big Picture

In the big picture of camp, it’s not entirely a revelation that numerous Jets prospects and depth players in this game, not to mention a few veterans, were collectively not a match for the mostly Hurricanes A-roster. But a theme through three road games in the pre-season has been a less than pretty scene in Winnipeg’s defensive zone.

Little picture

Jets goalie David Aebischer went all the way and though he wasn’t quite as overwrought as Slapshot’s Denis Lemieux, there were similarities. “All I can do is … I just want to play good hockey,” Aebischer said after facing 30 shots of pretty high quality. “I battled. Today was a day where they tried a lot of passes across. I think I battled hard, it just wasn’t enough.”

Game-breaker

When Hurricanes’ hopeful Jerome Samson wrestled a better position and the puck from Jets’ Dustin Byfuglien in the corner and then scored from a bad angle, you knew that was all she wrote in Charlotte.

Four score

Jets defenceman Dustin Byfuglien was involved in the play plenty on Sunday, and often the wrong way. He ended the shutout loss a minus-four.

Not alone

While Byfuglien was going minus, some of his fellow blueliners were struggling as well. Arturs Kulda was victimized on Carolina’s first goal by Zac Dalpe, failing to get the puck or the man to prevent Dalpe’s breakaway. Zach Bogosian’s clear to the point led to Jay Harrison’s goal while Randy Jones, though he was right there, fell down and was powerless to help Aebischer on Riley Nash’s fourth Carolina goal.

Free Press 3 Stars

Riley Nash. Canes forward had a goal, two points, plus-2.

Ryan Murphy. 18-year-old D man had first assist and was plus-3.

Cam Ward. Didn’t have a lot of quality chances to stop, but had 36 saves.
