Big picture
Jets erased Thursday’s coach-displeasing effort in losing to Washington, rebounding with five goals. The win let them jump over Montreal and Washington in the standings in the Eastern Conference, and up to ninth spot withi a mark 15-13-4.
Little picture
The home team had an extra challenge, having to navigate the arena’s emotion for the return of the Finnish Flash, Teemu Selanne of the Ducks. In a rare happening, the crowd was on both sides, roaring for Selanne as well as their home heroes. Two second-period goals were instrumental in getting the home team over the hump.
Game-breaker
Andrew Ladd’s controversial goal at 18:20 of the second period put the Jets ahead 4-2, a good spot heading for the third. But the Ducks thought the goal could have been reviewed or disallowed, given that Dustin Byfuglien’s shot from the point appeared redirected by Ladd’s skate, and that Jets forward Nik Antropov barged through the top of Ducks goalie Dan Ellis’s crease, though Antropov appeared pushed by Anaheim defender Cam Fowler. The goal stood, and proved to be the winner.
