If it’s eating him up, Montreal Canadiens’ interim head coach Randy Cunneyworth was hiding it well on Thursday.

The fabled franchise hasn’t won since he took over as coach from Jacques Martin last Saturday and Cunneyworth is at the centre of a maelstrom in Quebec as an Anglophone head coach unable to communicate with much of the media covering the team and the populace who religiously follow it.

“I’m not even concerned with that,” Cunneyworth said Thursday at the MTS Centre. “Those are stories I haven’t even read or looked at or thought about. We’re just trying to win some hockey games.”

Asked if the negative publicity undermined his authority with the team, Cunneyworth added: “I’m not reading those articles or listening to that kind of media. It may be going on, but I only know of it because I get the odd positive comment from a stranger or somebody who is close to me. I’m really focused on the group we have.”

Cunneyworth made a couple of dramatic coaching moves Thursday night, scratching both defenceman P.K. Subban and forward Lars Eller.

Subban is the Habs’ ice time leader this season, averaging 24 minutes per game.

The Pittsburgh Penguins, who haven’t played since Tuesday at home, were in Winnipeg in plenty of time for tonight’s contest against the Jets.

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma was seen watching the game in the pressbox Thursday night.

The Jets and Montreal kicked off the NHL’s new era in Winnipeg in an historic game on Oct. 9.

It was a forgettable night for the home team and its fans, as the Habs won the game 5-1.

In that spirit, Jets captain Andrew Ladd batted away a question on Thursday morning about his team’s preparation and what they might “take from” that Oct. 9 game.

“We played awful,” Ladd said. “We don’t want to take anything from that game.”
