The big picture

There’s no sugar-coating the cold, hard facts here: The Jets have lost five of their last six. Basic physics tells you it’s hard to tread water — let alone swim with those chasing a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference — with an anvil strapped to your collective backs. The Jets play their next 14 against conference rivals, and if they don’t stop the bleeding ASAP, could fade fast from the post-season discussion.

The little picture

No Byfuglien, no Bogosian, and Blake Wheeler exited in the second after taking a shot to the throat. The Jets won’t use injuries as an excuse — it is what it is was the mantra from the room — but it’s hard for any club to survive without its two best and most physical D-men and its leading scorer.

Game-breaker

Tight game, limited scoring chances, so no surprise that the game-winner was the game-breaker. Rookie Devils defenceman Adam Larsson’s slap pass to Patrick Elias was one-timed past Ondrej Pavelec with 7:17 remaining, turning a gritty Jets’ performance into another defeat.
