PITTSBURGH — Scott Arniel has found a new job, still very much in connection with the NHL.
The former Winnipeg Jet, Manitoba Moose and coach of the Moose confirmed, though without comment, that he’s accepted the job as the head coach of the AHL’s Chicago Wolves, the top affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks.
Arniel, 49, coached the Canucks’ farm team once before in his stint between 2006 and 2010 with the Moose.
From there, he accepted the head-coaching job with the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets. That lasted all of one-and-a-half seasons before he was terminated with a mark of 45-60-18.
The move carries some irony. Five years ago, who could have imagined that Arniel would go to work for the one-time Moose rival Wolves, while former Wolves GM Kevin Cheveldayoff would one day be the GM in Winnipeg with the NHL’s Jets.
“I suppose it might be a big story for the Big Bang Theory,” said Jets’ assistant GM Craig Heisinger, the former Moose GM and now assistant GM of the Jets. “Arch-enemies, the evil empire and the Manitoba Moose, I think that probably to a certain degree shows the respect between the organizations, despite the heated rivalry and all the fights and the wars.
“Competition is one thing but respect is another. I’m sure there’s other living proof as well but this might be a very modern-day one.”

The Jets have been working on a deal with RFA goalie Ondrej Pavelec but talks have been moving slowly with agent Allan Walsh positioning an offer from a KHL team as a possible destination.
Pavelec reportedly had an offer from St. Petersburg of the KHL to pay him $5.5 million for one year. That deal, however, now appears to be off the table.
Pavelec’s camp has been asking for a four-year pact in the $17 million range while the Jets have countered with a three-year deal south of $12 million.
The latest twist could provide the impetus for both sides to budge a bit and close a deal.
