The Winnipeg Jets could be without one of their star defencemen for the next four-to-six months as Zach Bogosian goes under the knife today for wrist surgery.
The club issued this statement Thursday from their head physician, Dr. Peter MacDonald:
‘(Bogosian) has been diagnosed with a chronic ligament tear in his right wrist. During off-season training, Zach experienced discomfort and was limited in his performance. Zach will thus undergo surgery this upcoming Friday performed by Dr. Thomas Graham at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.”
Dr. Graham has assisted the Jets’ medical and training staff with other players as well as performing surgery on numerous players in the NHL, NBA, and Major League Baseball. The Jets did not provide a timetable as to how long Bogosian, who is coming off his best season as a pro with five goals and 25 assists in 65 games, might need to recover but he could be lost for a significant amount of time.
The prognosis is the surgery could keep him out for a minimum of three months, likely longer. Jets’ GM Kevin Cheveldayoff is expected to provide an update after Bogosian’s surgery today.
Bogosian used his Twitter account Thursday to tweet this: ‘Thank you everyone for the well wishes it is much appreciated, hoping for a speedy recovery.’
The loss of Bogosian clearly opens a door for those already in the Jet system like Paul Postma, Zach Redmond, Derek Meech, Julian Melchiori or Brett Festerling, but also means the Jets could sniff around some still-unsigned unrestricted free agents.
That list might include the likes of Carlo Colaiacovo, Kurtis Foster, Milan Jurcina, Chris Campoli, Michael Rozsival or Jaroslav Spacek, depending on how much money management would want to spend and whether that signing was seen as long-term help or a short-term stop gap.
THE TV SKED: From the timing is everything department, the NHL — in the midst of CBA discussions and with a lockout looming — released its TV schedule on Thursday. All 82 Jets games will be on the tube.
Worth noting: the Jets will be featured on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada 21 times this season, including their home opener as they play host to the Carolina Hurricanes at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13.
The Jets will also play five times on TSN’s national network while all remaining games will be televised regionally this season on TSN Jets. As well, TSN 1290 will be broadcasting all 82 regular-season games and seven exhibition games.
