THE late machinations were ongoing in Winnipeg before the NHL lockout began in the final hours of Saturday.

In the final hours before the league shutdown, the Jets assigned 13 players to their AHL affiliate, the St. John’s IceCaps

Headlining the crew en route to St. John’s is 20-year-old centre Alexander Burmistrov, who has played two full-time NHL seasons in the organizations.

Burmistrov’s entry-level contract allows him to be sent to the AHL without waivers and to keep him playing and to monitor his development, Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff insisted he go to the IceCaps.

Burmistrov will make a salary of $67,500 Cdn while in the AHL, far less than his US $900,000 NHL earnings. He is owed $90,000 of signing bonus this season.

Burmistrov, the eighth pick of the 2010 draft, will be joined in St. John’s by Chris Carrozzi, Ben Chairot, Patrice Cormier, Jason Gregoire, Carl Klingberg, Julian Melchiori, Eric O’Dell, Will O’Neill, Edward Pasquale, Zach Redmond, Cody Sol and Ivan Telegin.

Rosters will be frozen during the lockout, and no transactions will be permitted.

The Jets organization has several other players who could skate for the IceCaps during the NHL lockout.

Among them are Spencer Machacek, who just signed a new deal with the team, Maxime Macenauer, Aaron Gagnon, Derek Meech, Paul Postma and goalie Mark Dekanich.

All except Dekanich played for the AHL team at some point last season and if they were to sign AHL contracts, they’d be eligible to play in the league this season.

The Jets also announced the formality that centre Mark Scheifele is assigned to the Barrie Colts of the OHL, where he’s already been playing for nearly three weeks.

If and when the NHL labour dispute is resolved, it’s believed at least the OHL and possibly all three Canadian junior leagues will agree to NHL teams accessing the drafted and signed elite talent that might otherwise be playing in the big leagues.

In that case, the Jets could hypothetically recall Scheifele to participate in the NHL season. Speculation is that they’d get one chance to do that, when the shortened NHL season might start.

Today, with the lockout underway, the Jets are expected to communicate with their season-ticket subscribers about what will happen to payments already made for 2012-13 game tickets.
