ABOUT THE CANES
— The Hurricanes have lost five in a row and are 4-5-1 in their last 10. Carolina is 15-13-2 for 32 points after 30 games. They have three games in hand on the Jets. The Hurricanes have not played since last Thursday, a 4-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils.
— Injuries have caught up to the Hurricanes of late. Forward Tuomo Ruutu has missed all 30 games, forward Chad LaRose (concussion) has missed 10 games, goaltender Cam Ward (knee) has missed nine games, defenceman Joe Corvo (lower body) has missed three games, goalie Dan Ellis (hip) is out seven to 10 days and defenceman Justin Faulk (knee) is out two to four weeks.
— Off-season pickup Alex Semin, who has produced eight goals and 22 assists, signed a new deal with the Canes on Monday, raking in $35 million over the next five years.
— With Ellis out for at least one week, the Hurricanes are down to eight-year journeyman Justin Peters and AHL netminder John Muse, who was recalled on Monday from the Charlotte Checkers.
