Redmond snags end-of-year award for grit, perseverance

DEFENCEMAN Zach Redmond was named the winner of the Dan Snyder Memorial Award Thursday night as the Jets handed out some end-of-season honours.

The Snyder award is given to the player who embodies perseverance, dedication and hard work without reward or recognition, so his team and teammates might succeed.

After a situation-critical skate cut to his thigh during morning-skate drills on Feb. 21 — requiring three hours of surgery to repair a sliced femoral artery and nerve and tendon damage, Redmond returned to play two AHL games last week for the St. John’s IceCaps and could have gone into the Jets lineup this week if needed.

Also recognized on Thursday were Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec, winner of the McDiarmid Lumber Three Stars Award, as well as defenceman Zach Bogosian, the winner of the Northwest Company Community Service Award.

LOOKING IN: Jets prospects Adam Lowry and Juho Olkinuora, recently signed by the team to entry-level contracts, were in attendance at Thursday night’s game.

Both players finished up their season with a brief stint with the IceCaps.

YANKS ADD STAPLETON: Former Jets forward Tim Stapleton was one of the first 15 players named to the U.S. Men’s National Team that will compete at the IIHF World Championship May 3-19 in Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden.

Also named were goaltenders Ben Bishop (Tampa) and Cal Heeter (Adirondack, AHL); forwards Nick Bjugstad (Florida), Bobby Butler and Craig Smith (Nashville), Danny Kristo, (Hamilton, AHL), Paul Statsny (Colorado) and Nate Thompson (Tampa) and defencemen Chris Butler (Calgary), Matt Carle (Tampa), Justin Faulk and Jamie McBain (Carolina), Matt Hunwick (Colorado) and Jeff Petry (Edmonton).

Stapleton, who scored 24 goals and added 16 assists in 52 games with the KHL’s Dynamo Minsk this season, could be joined by former fellow teammates on the Jets who may be candidates for the American team such as Zach Bogosian, Blake Wheeler, Jim Slater, Ron Hainsey, Dustin Byfuglien and Mark Stuart.

MORE ‘TOBANS: We listed the four Manitoban-born players among the Top 100 North American skaters on the NHL’s Central Scouting draft list on Thursday — Ryan Pulock, D, Brandon (WHL, Grandview), Max Domi, C, London (OHL, Winnipeg), Madison Bowey, D, Kelowna (WHL, Winnipeg) and Brendan Harms, RW (Fargo, USHL, Winnipeg). A couple of other names worth pointing out: Adam Henry, D, Lethbridge (WHL, Winnipeg) is ranked 165th and Pete Stoykewych, D, (Winnipeg Blues, MJHL, Winnipeg) is ranked 204th.
