At 0.8 per cent, tangible shot at first draft pick

IT’S miniscule, to be sure. But they call it a lottery for a reason and the Winnipeg Jets have a 0.8 per cent chance of landing the top pick in the 2013 National Hockey League Draft.

The draft lottery, a weighted system that will determine the order of selection for the first 14 picks, will be conducted tonight at 7 p.m. (TSN). The Jets — who finished ninth in the Eastern Conference with a 24-21-3 record — have the second-lowest odds of all the non-playoff teams, only slightly better than the Columbus Blue Jackets at 0.5 per cent.

The draft lottery will be the first in NHL history to give all of the 14 clubs who did not make the playoffs a chance to win the first overall pick. The odds of winning remain unchanged from previous years and after the draft lottery winner is determined, the remaining 13 teams will be slotted into their positions in reverse order of their regular-season point totals. Previously, the team that won the draft lottery could only move up four slots in the draft order.

CP NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly reveals the No. 1 winner in the draft lottery for 2012. The odds of him flipping over the Jets� logo this year are slim.

The NHL released the percentages of being selected in the draft lottery early Sunday with the actual draft going June 30 in New Jersey.

Nashville Predators – 10.7%

Carolina Hurricanes – 8.1%

Calgary Flames – 6.2%

Edmonton Oilers – 4.7%

New Jersey Devils – 2.7%

Dallas Stars – 2.1%

Philadelphia Flyers – 1.5%

Phoenix Coyotes – 1.1%

Winnipeg Jets – 0.8%

Columbus Blue Jackets – 0.5%

Ladd joining Team Canada

ANDREW Ladd’s hockey season has a little more life to it.

The Winnipeg Jets announced Sunday that their captain will be joining Team Canada for the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation Championships which run May 3-19, 2013 in Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden.

Ladd, 27, is coming off a superb season for the Jets in which he led the club in scoring with 46 points (18 goals, 28 assists). He has worn Canada’s colours before, notably as part of the Dream Team that won gold at the 2005 World Junior Championships in Grand Forks, N.D. and last year in Slovakia where he was one of Canada’s alternate captains.
