Halischuk happy with two helpers against Wild

SCRAPPY forward Matt Halischuk figured into both Winnipeg goals against the Wild on Saturday afternoon, though he demurred from calling it his best game as a Jet.

“It was definitely nice to contribute on the scoresheet,” he said, before hopping a plane to New Jersey on Sunday afternoon. “I always try to play consistent, and play hard.”

Halischuk is heading back to his old stomping grounds tonight: The Devils drafted him 117th overall in 2007, and he played 21 games with the NHL club before they swapped him and a draft pick to Nashville for Jason Arnott in 2010.

Plum opportunities for points on Jets road trip

THE Jets are 1-2-2 in their last five tilts going into their longest roadie of the year, a six-game eastern swing. Maybe the trip will be a good thing, the coach mused.

“I think it’s a good time for us to get away,” Claude Noel said. “It’ll be good for us to go there and try to gather some wins. It’s good for building team cohesion as well, to get away after awhile.”

It’s worth noting that of the Jets’ next six opponents, four sit below them in the league standings (although with fewer games played) and the 12-11-0 Rangers aren’t exactly lighting up the NHL. If the Jets are to claw their way into relevance, they won’t get many opportunities more plum than this — especially not playing in West.

Well, one thing at a time, and for the Jets the first task is to eke out another win against New Jersey tonight. The last time the clubs met, on Oct. 13, the Jets came away with a 3-0 home win. “They don’t give you too much,” Noel said. “For us, it’s gonna be, we gotta play our game and try to minimize their chances. It’ll be a tough game.”
