ABOUT THE AVS
- After starting so hot that one feared for the ice, this young Avalanche team has cooled off in recent weeks. They won 13 of their first 15 tilts, but have taken just half of their 14 games since. Coach Patrick Roy was steaming after they dropped their second straight on Tuesday to the Phoenix Coyotes, their third loss in four games. That’s left them clinging to eighth in the WesternConference, in danger of falling out of their playoff spot.
- Colorado’s penalty kill is ranked a mediocre 22nd in the NHL, at 80.9 per cent. The Jets’ power play is the third-worst in the league, cashing in on just 11.3 per cent of their chances. Mash that together and you’ve got a chance for one team or the other to pad a hurting stat.
- Scoring, lately, has been a problem. Paul Stastny hasn’t banged in a goal or even fed an assist in seven games. Matt Duchene and Ryan O’Reilly have also gone cold. Solid goaltending from Jean-Sebastien Giguere and Semyon Varlamov, who starts tonight, has kept them in games (the Avs have been outshot in 12 of their 20 wins), and wunderkind captain Gabe Landeskog has been solid all along, but the Avs need more from their slumping leaders.
- The Avs are a little banged up right now. Forward Alex Tanguay is on the shelf with a hip injury, and blue-liners Jan Hejda and Ryan Wilson, who hasn’t played since Nov. 6, aren’t expected back on the bench for tonight’s game. Their absence has put more pressure on blue-line guys such as Nate Guenin, Cory Sarich and Tyson Barrie, and at times they’ve looked to bend under the extra weight.
