BOSTON — The Jets’ difficulties Saturday were apparent.

Their defending just wasn’t up to snuff against a very potent team.

Rookie blue-liner Jacob Trouba was minus-three, his worst plus-minus outing of the season and snapping a string of four straight plus games.

And there was no better illustration than the game-winning goal to show the work that yet remains for the Jets.

On Torey Krug’s point shot at 3:08 of the second period, Boston’s Justin Florek was parked at Ondrej Pavelec’s crease, providing a wonderful screen. Flanking Florek without action were Jets defencemen Dustin Byfuglien and Keaton Ellerby, who watched the puck fly by and into the back of the net.

The scrapping by Chris Thorburn and James Wright contributed to a spirited first period by the visitors on Saturday, but it was not near enough for victory.

“I thought… we were good in the first,” said Jets coach Claude Noel. “We played hard. It was a 1-1 game and we came out in the second and they got a couple of goals off point shots that went in and it kind of deflated us a little bit. In the first, we showed up and played.

“It would have been nice to get the second goal rather than them.”

With four goals against on 29 shots, Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec took another hit in the numbers in his first start back after sitting out three.

Pavelec fell to 11-17-4.

The Jets head coach was placing no blame on Pavelec.

“They had a couple of shots that went in through traffic. It’s getting people in front of the goalie and our guy didn’t have a chance on any or many of the goals, really,” said Noel “He wasn’t able to see the shots.

“That’s how you score goals in today’s game.”

Ahead for the Jets is today’s game in Pittsburgh, where there isn’t much recent, happy history.

Since their move to Winnipeg, the Jets have lost in Pittsburgh 8-5, 8-4 and 4-0.

“It’s another team that if you respect them, they’ll embarrass you,” Evander Kane said Saturday. “It’s Crosby, Malkin, whoever the hell they have on their team, if you give them too much respect, you’re going to get embarrassed.”
