★ Martin St. Louis, Lightning: St. Louis had something to prove Tuesday night after he was left off Canada’s Olympic team earlier in the day — and then he proved it, scoring the game-winner at 8:39 of the third period and then adding the insurance marker with just 26 seconds to play.

★★ Valtteri Filppula, Lightning: Filppula staked the Lightning to an early 1-0 lead, undressing Jets defenceman Dustin Byfuglien and then beating goalie Ondrej Pavelec with a wrist shot just 1:20 into the first period.

★★★ Mark Scheifele, Jets:  The Winnipeg rookie continued his recent stellar play last night, wiring a perfect goalmouth pass onto the stick of Olli Jokinen for Winnipeg’s first goal at 16:43 of the first period.

KARLSSON, WEBER, KRUG… AND BYFUGLIEN?

With his 10th goal of the season last night — and fourth in his last seven games — Winnipeg defenceman Dustin Byfuglien was tied for the NHL lead in goals by a defencemen with Ottawa’s Erik Karlsson, Boston’s Torey Krug and Nashville’s Shea Weber.

Alas, Byfuglien was at his very best and very worst Tuesday night — scoring a goal and an assist, but also getting undressed on two Tampa Bay rushes that led directly to Lightning goals and standing idly by for Tampa’s game-winner in the third period.

 

A NEW LOW:

With Tuesday night’s 4-2 loss to Tampa Bay, the Jets are now pointless in their last four games — the club’s longest points drought of the 2013-14 season.

Winnipeg also went three games without a point on two other occasions this season, but they ended the points drought in the fourth game both previous times.
