үӯ BLUEPRINT:
Paul Maurice has said it’s unfair to judge Ondrej Pavelec until his entire team begins playing the defensive system the way he expects. Saturday night had to be pretty close to the blueprint. Pavelec faced just 18 shots and was steady and relaxed all game.
үӯ CUTDOWN DAY:
NHL teams must trim their rosters to 23 players plus injuries by Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Jets still have 31 players in camp and some decisions to make. Winnipeg still has two players, Patrice Cormier and Eric O’Dell, on the injured list. Once healthy it’s most likely these two are headed to the AHL, leaving the Jets with six other players to re-assign. Winnipeg has three junior-aged players — Nik Ehlers, Nic Petan and Josh Morrissey — still in camp and if they go back to junior that gets the Jets to 26 players. Goalie Danny Taylor is still in camp and likely to be reassigned and that will put the Jets at 25. Still in the fight for NHL jobs are defencemen Keaton Ellerby and Ben Chiarot, plus forwards T.J. Galiardi and Matt Halischuk. Best guess here is Ellerby and Chiarot head to the AHL and Galiardi and Halischuk make the grade to start the season.
үӯ UP NEXT:
The Jets will take a few days to practice and get in their routine before travelling to Glendale to open the season against the Arizona Coyotes, Thursday, 9 p.m. (TSN 3/TSN 1290).
