The Sharks arrive in Winnipeg for the first game of a three-game road trip that will also include stops in Minnesota and St. Louis. The Sharks were drilled 7-2 by St. Louis at home on Saturday night and at 20-14-5 hold down the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference, two points back of the Jets, and tied with the Calgary Flames, who have played one more game.

San Jose was without big centre Joe Thornton in the loss to the Blues, ending his consecutive games streak at 319. Thornton was injured in the Sharks’ win over Anaheim on New Year’s Eve after taking a hit on his shoulder. It was the first time he had missed a game since Nov. 9, 2010 while he was serving the second of a two-game suspension. On Sunday, the Sharks officially placed Thornton on the injured-reserve list.

The Sharks were 0-for-6 on the power play against the Blues, dropping their ranking from fifth overall to seventh (21.8 per cent). Sharks forward Joe Pavelski leads the NHL with 10 power-play goals and since 2010-11 only Alex Ovechkin (67) and Steven Stamkos (54) have scored more goals with the man advantage than Pavelski (50).

Brent Burns is third in the NHL on the defencemen scoring list with eight goals and 19 assists in 39 games, trailing only Calgary’s Mark Giordano (35 points) and Kevin Shattenkirk of the Blues (28 points).

The Jets and Sharks have met only once previous this year, with San Jose blanking their visitors 3-0 back on Oct. 11.
