ABOUT THE CAPS
The Caps, 39-23-10, are coming off a 3-2 win over Minnesota in St. Paul Thursday night — their first-ever win at XCel Energy Center. They enter play Friday night holding down the first Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference — five points ahead of Boston. Washington and Pittsburgh, third in the Metropolitan Division, both have the same point total of 88, but the Pens have a game in hand.
Washington captain Alex Ovechkin scored twice in the win over the Wild, upping his league-leading total to 47. He has 13 multi-goal games this year, marking the fourth time in his career he has registered 13 or more multi-goal games in a season. His career best is 14 multi-goal seasons, set during the 2009-10 campaign. That total tied him with Dennis Maruk (1981-82) for the franchise record.
More Ovie: he nows sits three goals shy of tying Peter Bondra (472) for first place on the Caps franchise goal list. Ovechkin leads the NHL in points (73), goals (47), power-play goals (21), game-winning goals (11) and shots (354) this season.
Braden Holtby backstopped the win over the Wild on Thursday and, in the process, moved past Al Jensen for third place on the Capitals franchise wins list with 95. In last Monday’s win over Buffalo Holtby recorded his eighth shutout of the season, becoming the second Washington netminder in franchise history to reach that total (Jim Carey has nine in 1995-96).
