DAY 3
PLAYERS IN CAMP ON ROSTER: 49.
SICK-BAY UPDATE: LW Andrew Ladd, D Jan Kostalek, C John Albert, G Jussi Olkinoura did not practise.
Ladd experienced some ‘tightening’ up after practice Saturday and the club opted to keep him off the ice. The captain, remember, had offseason surgery on a sports-hernia injury, although Jets coach Paul Maurice did not indicate if this was related.
NEWS OF THE DAY: The Jets held another intra-squad scrimmage featuring most of their veterans, with Team Blue edging Team White 5-4. Blue held a 4-1 advantage after two periods on goals by Andrew Copp, Brendan Lemieux, Jay Harrison and Dustin Byfuglien and then gave that lead up in a 3-on-3 session. Copp scored his second of the afternoon for the winner. Mathieu Perreault scored for White in regulation and Paul Postma, Nikolaj Ehlers and Jacob Trouba in 3-on-3. It wasn’t the score that jumped out, but the intensity level in a scrappy affair.
“There’s no play fighting even between brothers, at some point. It gets physical,” said Maurice with a grin afterward. “There was great intensity and that’s a real good sign. That’s more an indication of they play who they are. It’s not even an exhibition game, it’s a scrimmage, so it’s two down on the rung of competition, but the level was really good and hard.”
The line of Lemieux-Copp-Joel Armia was especially effective in the game. “They ended up about plus-4 or plus-3 in about two minutes,” said Maurice. “They were good. Copp has gotten better, Lemieux has been really consistent and Armia moves the puck very well. After a scrimmage like that I’m not really scratching names off, I’m more circling guys that probably deserve more of a look based on that.”
QUOTABLE: Tyler Myers on being traded to a team midseason: “It’s tough when you come to a new city, especially for me, who likes to eat. I didn’t know any of the good spots to eat so it took me awhile to get used to that. I’ve found some pretty good spots now, so that’s all I need.”
Reporter: did you want to give a shout-out to some places and maybe get a free meal?
“No,” he said, with a grin. “I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.”
NOTABLE: Maurice said they won’t begin chopping down the number of players in camp until they finish with all their on-ice testing. He’d also like to see the younger prospects get at least a week before they are reassigned to their junior clubs or are assigned to the Moose.
TODAY’S SKED: Group 1: 9-10:30 a.m.; Group 2: Noon-1:30 p.m. at the MTS Iceplex.
