The Winnipeg Jets put pen to paper with one of their restricted free agents Saturday.

Defenceman Julian Melchiori was inked to a two-year, two-way deal with an annual average value of US$625,000 in the NHL.

Melchiori, 24, played 11 games last season with the big club, failing to register a point. In 62 games with the Manitoba Moose the Richmond Hill, Ont., native scored three times and added four helpers.

In 235 career AHL games, Melchiori has six goals and 32 points split between the Moose and the St. John’s IceCaps.

Melchiori was drafted 87th overall by the Atlanta Thrashers in 2010.

Meanwhile, the Jets signed goaltender Jamie Phillips to a two-year entry-level contract worth an average annual value of US$675,000 in the NHL.

Phillips wrapped up a four-year college career at Michigan Tech University this past season, posting a 1.97 goals against average and a .922 save percentage in 36 games.

During the 2014-15 season, Philips was named a WCHA first-team all-star and was nominated for the Mike Richter Award honouring the most outstanding goaltender in NCAA men’s hockey.

The Caledonia, Ont., native recorded a 28-9-2 record that season with a 1.74 GAA and a .933 save percentage as a member of the Huskies.

Phillips was a seventh-round pick by the Jets in 2012.

Cup-winner Kompon

behind Jets’ bench

The Winnipeg Jets added a two-time Stanley Cup winner to their stable of assistant coaches Saturday.

Jamie Kompon, who spent the last two seasons as the head coach and general manager of the Western Hockey League’s Portland Winterhawks, will join head coach Paul Maurice, Charlie Huddy, Wade Flaherty and Matt Prefontaine behind the bench for the upcoming season.

Kompon replaces the outgoing Pascal Vincent, who was hired as the head coach of the Manitoba Moose last month.

Kompon has extensive experience as an assistant coach, winning Stanley Cups in back-to-back seasons with the Los Angeles Kings in 2012 and the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013.

Kompon led the Portland Winterhawks to a 77-54-13 record over the past two seasons and coached Jets prospects Nic Petan and Chase De Leo during the 2014-15 campaign.

Kompon played professionally in the East Coast Hockey League and in Germany after playing four seasons at McGill University, where he also spent time as a co-head coach during the 1994-95 season.

The Thunder Bay, Ont., native was an assistant coach with the American Hockey League’s Baltimore Bandits during the 1996-97 season.

He moved to the St. Louis Blues following that season and would spend the next nine years in various roles with the club.

He was hired as the Kings’ director of amateur development in 2006.
