ABOUT THE AVALANCHE
— The Avalanche are coming off a rare five-day break after their most recent game Saturday, a 5-2 loss to the host Florida Panthers. Colorado has played just five games this season, while every other team in the Central Division has played at least two.
— Colorado is coached by Jared Bednar, 44, of Yorkton, Sask., who was hired in late August. He replaced Patrick Roy, who abruptly quit as head coach and VP of hockey operations earlier that month. Bednar won the AHL’s Calder Cup championship as bench boss of the Lake Erie Monsters last season.

— Avalanche centre Matt Duchene, who played his 500th career game Saturday, continues to be one of the club’s offensive leaders, scoring three goals and adding two assists in five games. Forward Nathan MacKinnon and defenceman Patrick Wiercioch share the team scoring lead with Duchene, with a goal and four assists each.
— Veteran forward John Mitchell could make his season debut Friday at home. The 31-year-old Oakville, Ont., product missed the first five games of the season with a hip flexor injury. Rookie forward Mikko Rantanen, 19, could make his season debut after the Finn suffered an ankle injury during rookie camp. Colorado forward Rene Bourque (groin) and defenceman Fedor Tyutin (groin) are listed as day to day.
