❯❯ About the BLUES

St. Louis is playing the second half of a back-to back tonight after hosting the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday. The Blues were 32-20-3, third in the Central Division behind Winnipeg and Nashville, prior to their contest with the much-improved Avs. The Blues had scored 22 fewer goals than the Jets, but much of that has to do with their anemic power play. St. Louis is 28th in the NHL with the man advantage (16%), firing 28 power-play goals — 17 fewer than Winnipeg’s second-ranked PP (24.1%).

Former Brandon Wheat Kings sniper C Brayden Schenn is having a career year in his first season with St. Louis after getting traded from Philadelphia during the summer C Jori Lehtera, the No. 27 pick in the 2017 NHL Draft and a conditional pick in the 2018 draft. Schenn leads the club in scoring (21G, 30A), including seven game-winning goals, and is a plus-18.

Schenn and RW Vladimir Tarasenko are tied for the team goal-scoring lead with 21 tallies apiece. But Tarasenko had gone five games without a goal prior to Thursday, the last one coming Jan. 23 at home against Ottawa. LW Jaden Schwartz missed 20 games due to an ankle injury but returned the lineup Jan. 25 and has two goals and two assists in five games since then. Despite missing all that time, he’s third in team scoring (16G, 21A).

G Jake Allen (18-15-2) began the season as the Blues starter, but lately head coach Mike Yeo has turned to G Carter Hutton with much more regularity. Simply put, Hutton’s numbers are superior. The 32-year-old product of Thunder Bay has been between the pipes the last six games, and has won six of his last seven starts. He’s 14-5-1 with a 1.74 goals-against average and a .943 save percentage.

Ex-Jets rugged RW Chris Thorburn has yet to score this season and has just three assists in 28 games. He’s been a healthy scratch in five of the Blues’ last six games and 10 of their last 15.
