SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Winnipeg Jets will be fishing for valuable points and looking to stay well above water in the ultra-competitive Central division as they enter the Shark Tank tonight.
Winnipeg (28-13-7) is coming off two straight weekend wins and looking to keep the momentum going as they begin a two-game California road trip. They take on San Jose (26-14-6) tonight in the Bay Area, then head south to play Anaheim on Thursday.
“These guys are playing extremely well right now, so it’s going to be a big challenge for us,” captain Blake Wheeler said following the morning skate at SAP Center. The Sharks have also won two straight games and are 6-2-2 in their past 10.
There are no changes to the lineup that skated to a 2-1 shootout victory in Calgary Saturday afternoon, then followed up with a 1-0 win over Vancouver at Bell MTS Place on Sunday night.
Centre Adam Lowry remains out with an injury. He took part in the morning skate but was in a yellow no-contact jersey. Coach Paul Maurice said there’s a good chance Lowry won’t return until after this weekend’s All-Star Break.
“I don’t know if patient is the right word, but we certainly want to make sure that he feels completely confident in his injury before he goes,” said Maurice.
The Jets will come out of that break by kicking off a 10-game homestand next Tuesday.
San Jose beat Winnipeg 4-0 on Nov. 25 in their rink, and the Jets paid the Sharks back by winning 4-1 on home ice earlier this month.
“We’re coming into a very tough place to play and a very good team over there,” Jets defenceman Tyler Myers said this morning. “They’re a really good transition team off turnovers so we’re going to have to be smart with the puck, especially at the blue lines and try to bring our best.”
Connor Hellebuyck, who stopped 59 of 60 shots in the two weekend wins to earn the NHL’s Second Star award, gets the start in goal. Hellebuyck and Wheeler will represent the Jets Sunday at the All-Star game in Tampa Bay.
