UNIONDALE, N.Y — Starting goalie Connor Hellebuyck will be a suprising spectator for a second consecutive game, as backup Laurent Brossoit gets the call in net tonight against the New York Islanders.
Winnipeg Jets coach Paul Maurice announced the decision following the morning skate here at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. He cited the strong play of Brossoit in Friday night’s 5-4 shootout victory in New Jersey, especially after the Devils stormed out to a 4-0 lead.
“I just really liked his game. And then I thought after they made it 4-0, I don’t know that three and four he loved, but he made a couple of really big saves after. So that gave us the chance to mount the comeback. I really liked his camp, he’s been solid and good. Had a day off there off of back-to-back, I thought he was the right guy to go,” said Maurice.

Brossoit finished with 35 saves, plus another four stops in the shootout as Winnipeg evened its record at 1-1-0 on this four-game eastern road trip to start the year. Hellebuyck struggled in Thursday’s season-opener against the New York Rangers, giving up five goals on 31 shots in a 6-4 loss at Madison Square Garden.
“This one’s not a big one for me because it’s the start of the year. Connor’s gonna play lots of hockey, he’s gonna get lots of games. So it wasn’t a heavy one, it wasn’t a season on the line kind of thing,” Maurice said when asked what kind of conversation he needed to have with Hellebuyck, who also looked shaky in three pre-season appearances.
The Jets will be looking for a second consecutive win, facing an Islanders club that is 0-1-0 after a 2-1 loss on home ice Friday. The Jets wrap up the road trip Tuesday night in Pittsburgh.
No other lineup changes are expected, meaning defenceman Carl Dahlstrom and rookie forward David Gustafsson will be healthy scratches for a third straight game. Veteran centre Bryan Little, who suffered a concussion in a pre-season game, was a full participant at the morning skate, albeit in a yellow non-contact jersey.
He’s expected to practise with the Jets Monday in Pittsburgh, but is doubtful to play against the Penguins the following night. However, a return is imminent if he suffers no setbacks.
