The Winnipeg Jets have managed to salvage something for pending unrestricted free agent centre Kevin Hayes, who was not going to be re-signed by the club.
General manager Kevin Cheveldayof swung a deal Monday night in which the rights to Hayes were traded to the Philadelphia Flyers for a fifth-round draft pick.
That now gives the Jets four lottery tickets at the upcoming draft, to be held June 21-22 in Vancouver: A second-round pick, a fourth-round pick and two fifth-round selections.

The moves allows the Flyers to have exclusive negotiating rights to Hayes leading up to July 1 free agency. It’s clear they have significant interest in signing him.
Hayes, 27, was acquired at the February trade deadline from the New York Rangers in exchange for Winnipeg’s first-round draft pick and Brendan Lemieux.
He had five goals and seven assists in 20 regular season games with the Jets, and two goals and one assist in six playoff games.
However, upcoming salary cap constraints on the Jets – who have several key players they need to re-sign — meant Hayes was not in the future plans.
