MOSCOW — Vladimir Krutov, one of the Soviet Union’s all-time great hockey players and part of the national team’s formidable KLM Line, has died. He was 52.
The Russian Hockey Federation said Krutov died Wednesday. It did not give a cause of death, but the ITAR-Tass news agency said he had been taken to a hospital several days earlier for stomach bleeding.
Born in Moscow, Krutov gathered attention for his play with a local factory team, Meteor, and was then invited to the hockey school of the CSKA Moscow club. He played with the team between 1978-89.
Krutov and his CSKA teammates Igor Larionov and Sergei Makarov formed one of the most potent scoring lines hockey has ever seen, and led the Soviet team to gold in the 1984 and 1988 Olympics.
He was one of the first Soviet players to play in the NHL, but spent only one undistinguished season with the Vancouver Canucks.
McCarty, wife under protection PONTIAC, Mich. — Court records show retired NHL player Darren McCarty and his wife got personal protection orders last month against four former friends in suburban Detroit. The Detroit News reported Wednesday that the veteran of 15 NHL seasons, who won four Stanley Cups with the Red Wings, claims harassment by the three women and one man. McCarty and his wife, Sheryl, say in court papers the four tried to draw McCarty back into a partying lifestyle. and the harassment has included death threats.
Oilers extend GM Tambellini
EDMONTON — The Edmonton Oilers and general manager Steve Tambellini have agreed on a contract extension.
Tambellini has been the team’s GM since 2008. He’s looking for a new head coach. Tom Renney’s contract wasn’t renewed after the season.
The Oilers haven’t made the playoffs since reaching the Stanley Cup final in 2006.
Edmonton has the first overall pick in the NHL draft later this month for the third straight year.
