“I worry about Teemu Selanne. I skate with him back home. He’s 42 years old. You look at the good things he’s done for this league, and now suddenly this could be his last year. That wouldn’t be the right way for a future Hall of Famer to go out of the game. He should be out there playing every night, but now they’re not giving us a chance to do that. It’s unfair.” — Minnesota Wild goaltender Nik Backstrom, in an interview with the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

NOTABLE

The ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones announced Tuesday their ‘Lockout Relief’ package: six tickets and a T-shirt for $85.

BAD NEWS DEPT.

The Florida Panthers announced layoffs on Tuesday, indicating they are primarily because of the NHL lockout. Included among them was their mascot, Stanley C. Panther.

ON THE MOVE

NHL player movement, some rumoured, some confirmed:

— Anze Kopitar, Los Angeles, Mora (Sweden)

— Patrick Berglund, St. Louis, Vasteras (Sweden)

— Niklas Backstrom, Minnesota, Dynamo Minsk (KHL)

— Yannick Weber, Montreal, Geneva-Servette (Switzerland)

— Radek Martinek, Columbus, Mountfield Ceske Budejovice (Czech Republic)

— Roman Cervenka, Calgary, Slava Prague (Czech Republic)

A GOOD QUESTION ANSWERED

A reader asks if the lockout lasts for a season, does that eat up a year of all the player contracts and effectively make players on one-year deals — like Alex Ponikarovsky or Kyle Wellwood — free agents next summer? The answer is, yes.

A HOCKEY TV

SUBSTITUTE? HARDLY

CTV announced Tuesday it will launch Big Bang Night in Canada — a two-hour block featuring back-to-back episodes of The Big Bang Theory beginning Oct. 13. This from the network’s press release: “Aimed squarely at the millions of hockey fans coast-to-coast-to-coast, the Saturday night initiative has been created to provide a weekly distraction from despair, while offering a few laughs along the way.”
