DETROIT — The Detroit Red Wings have put forward Johan Franzen on long-term injury reserve because of concussion-like symptoms.
Red Wings general manager Ken Holland says Franzen is out indefinitely.
Franzen played on back-to-back days in October, returning to the ice for the first time in nine months. He missed 49 games last year because of a concussion and also missed much of the previous season with concussion-like symptoms.
When healthy enough to play, Franzen was a key scorer for the Red Wings. He has 187 goals and 370 points in 602 career games.
Pens’ Matta out of hospital
DEFENCEMAN Olli Maatta is expected to be sidelined three to four weeks after being injured in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 4-3 victory Tuesday night against the Minnesota Wild.
That might not seem like particularly good news, but it could have been much worse.
Initially, there were fears Maatta might have suffered damage to one or more internal organs. Those proved to be unfounded and, although the team has not specified the nature of his injury, it is believed to involve soft tissue and/or muscles.
Maatta, who had been hospitalized Tuesday night, was released Wednesday afternoon.
Wild lose Scandella
THE Minnesota Wild placed defenceman Marco Scandella on injured reserve Thursday with a lower-body injury sustained Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Penguins and recalled Gustav Olofsson.
Scandella missed Thursday’s game in Boston and will not play Saturday in Nashville and would be eligible to come off in time for next Wednesday’s game against Vancouver.
But coach Mike Yeo didn’t seem overly convincing this will end up being a short-term thing for Scandella, who has three goals and three assists in 15 games, is plus-2, has 24 shots and ranks third among Wild defencemen in average ice time per game (20:02)
Teravainen sidelined
THE Chicago Blackhawks play two games the next two nights, but they might be without Teuvo Teravainen for both of them.
Coach Joel Quenneville said after Thursday’s optional skate the 21-year-old forward could be out “a couple games” after suffering an upper-body injury in Wednesday’s 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers.
“Hopefully that’s it,” Quenneville said.
The Hawks face the Calgary Flames tonight and the Canucks Saturday.
Teravainen left in the second period Wednesday night and did not return. Quenneville said there’s no threat Teravainen’s injury is serious enough for him to go on injured reserve. There’s a “good chance” Andrew Desjardins will take Teravainen’s spot in the lineup, Quenneville said. Desjardins had been a healthy scratch the last three games.
