Winnipeg product Nolan Patrick will be sidelined for the entire 2022-23 NHL season, Vegas Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon confirmed to reporters Thursday during the team’s training camp.
The former Brandon Wheat Kings star centre and second-overall pick at the 2017 NHL Draft has been hampered with injuries, which have included lingering concussion issues.
Patrick has 32 goals and 45 assists in 222 games in four seasons, the bulk spent in Philadelphia.
Nolan Patrick: hampered by injuries
McCrimmon was asked if Patrick, who turned 24 earlier this week, is contemplating retirement.
“We’ve talked different times… there just hasn’t been the progress (in his health). This is all about just real life for now and getting Nolan healthy, day to day… ” he said. “There’s no reason to make those decisions now. Let’s just see how it plays out. We are declaring him out for the season, so I think that’s a sobering reflection of where this is at for Nolan.
“Our hopes are let’s just get Nolan healthy first and then we’ll see what lies ahead in his future. He’s a young guy and we hope good things for him.”
Patrick was traded twice on the same day in the summer of 2021, going from the Flyers along with defenceman Philippe Myers to Nashville for blue-liner Ryan Ellis. Hours later, he was traded from the Predators to the Golden Knights for forward Cody Glass, a fellow Winnipegger.
He scored twice and added five assists in 25 games with Vegas last year.
Patrick is set to earn US$1.2 million this season, the last of a two-year contract, before becoming a restricted free agent next summer.
