MEDICINE HAT, Alta. — Conor Geekie potted his first WHL career hat trick to power the Winnipeg Ice to a 5-2 triumph over the Medicine Hat Tigers before 2,535 fans at Co-op Place Saturday night.
Geekie has four goals in three games since returning from an extended training camp stay with the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes.
Winnipeg has now won four consecutive road games from the start of the season and will play nine more away from home before hosting its home opener against the Brandon Wheat Kings on Oct. 29.
Skyler Bruce, with his first goal of season, provided the winning goal on a slick steal-and-deke play at 12:21 of the second period.
Defenceman Jaren Brinson scored his first goal as a member of the Ice, an empty-netter, in the final minute.
Oasiz Wiesblatt and Tyler MacKenzie replied with goals for the Tigers, who fell to 1-1-0-0.
Keegan Maddocks made 32 stops to earn his first career win in his regular-season debut for the Ice.
Winnipeg head coach James Patrick gave No. 1 goaltender Daniel Hauser, winner of three straight road games to open the seasons, the night off. Ice rookie Dawson Cowan served as Saturday’s backup.
Medicine Hat goaltender Beckett Langkow had 19 saves.
Import forward Vladislav Shilo, acquired earlier in the week from the Prince Albert Raiders, made his Ice debut.
Winnipeg went 1-for-4 on the power play. Medicine Hat was scoreless in three chances.
