MOOSE JAW, Sask. — Connor McClennon’s goal with 45 seconds left in the game lifted the Winnipeg Ice to a thrilling 5-4 triumph over the Moose Jaw Warriors at Mosaic Place Saturday night.
McClennon’s goal, his eighth of the season, capped a four-goal Ice rally late in the third period. The Ice is now 9-0-0-0 to start the regular season.
Matt Savoie scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season for the visitors. Carson Lambos also scored for Winnipeg.
Brayden Yager scored twice and Ryder Korczak and Robert Baco added singles for the Warriors, who led 3-0 midway through the second period before Winnipeg tied the game at 4-4 with defenceman Nolan Orzeck’s goal at 14:03 of the third period. Moose Jaw is 3-5-0-0 overall.
Winnipeg outshot Moose Jaw 20-7 in the third period.
Carl Tetachuk finished with 42 saves in the Warriors net. Ice goaltender Gage Alexander stopped 23 shots.
The Warriors played without star defenceman Daemon Hunt, who was serving the first game of a four-game suspension after being assessed a charging major and game misconduct in a game in Winnipeg on Wednesday.
Hunt’s hit knocked Ice forward Zach Benson out of the game. Benson did not dress Saturday night.
