The Manitoba Marathon is gearing up to welcome runners back for the first time in nearly two years.

“Well, for us to be able to host an in-person event as I said it’s impossible to understate the level of excitement we have to be able to welcome runners and walkers to the start line of the marathon,” said Rachel Munday, Executive Director of the Manitoba Marathon.

This year will mark the 43rd instalment of the marathon and is scheduled for Sept. 5. Munday is very excited for the event after the marathon was forced to go to a virtual platform in 2020 and says it’ll serve more than one purpose.

“More than that it’s about bringing the community together, it’s about people being able to celebrate their achievements, accomplishments and perseverance through the last two years and it’s an opportunity for us to raise funds for the community,” said Munday.

Based on the recent updates from Manitoba Public Health, Munday says the marathon was able to increase their start line wave sizes as registration for the event is taking place and is reminding the public that all of their COVID-19 safety protocols will remain in place.

“While we have up to 4,000 people on race day, this will include masks at the start and finish line area, masks through the aid stations on the course and social distancing at the start and finish line,” said Munday.

The executive director is proud to have the distinction of running the first event of its kind in Canada since 2019.

“It’s exciting for us, we will be the first mass participation event to take place in almost two years,” said Munday.

“Queen City Marathon will happen the following weekend, Calgary Marathon is Sept. 17, we have the distinct pleasure of going first so all eyes will be on us.”

Munday noted registration is open until Aug. 23 and the event was 70 per cent sold out as of Wednesday. In addition, participants will need to carry their own water bottles to be refilled by volunteers at the hospitality stations.

Furthermore, there will be three different times for runners to pick up their race kits. Located at the Bombers Tailgate Tent on Chancellor Matheson Road, race kits will be available for pickup on Sept. 1 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and noon to 7 p.m., Sept. 2 and 3.

The organization notes bib numbers will be emailed to participants by Tues., Aug. 31.
