Monaco lose on penalties at Guingamp in Jardim’s 1st match

GUINGAMP, France – Leonardo Jardim’s return as Monaco coach started with a loss on penalties to Guingamp in the League Cup semifinals on Tuesday.

Guingamp fought back from two goals down against 10-man Monaco to make it 2-2 at full time and won 5-4 on penalties to book a spot in the final against either Strasbourg or Bordeaux.

Monaco fired Thierry Henry and re-hired Jardim on Friday, three months after sacking the title-winning coach to make way for the France great.

Jardim’s second spell got off to a difficult start as midfielder William Vainqueur was sent off in the 14th minute, with the help of video review, for a dangerous tackle on Guingamp forward Marcus Thuram — the son of former France international footballer Lilian Thuram.

However, Rony Lopes put Monaco ahead four minutes later with an acrobatic effort and Aleksandr Golovin netted his first goal for the club in the 24th.

Alexandre Mendy pulled one back for Guingamp 16 seconds into the second half and Thuram levelled in the 55th.

Guingamp coach Jocelyn Gourvennec replaced goalkeeper Karl Johan Johnsson with Marc-Aurele Caillard in stoppage time and that bold decision paid off,

Caillard saved two penalties — from Benjamin Henrichs and Kamil Glik — and Monaco midfielder Sofiane Diop saw his hit the crossbar.

Monaco goalkeeper Danijel Subasic, something of a specialist in saving penalties, also managed to stop two — from Felix Eboa Eboa and Thuram.
