BRADENTON, Fla. – Canada defeated Curacao 4-0 Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Men’s Under-17 Championship and move within one win of qualifying for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil later this year.
Kamron Habibullah, captain Simon Colyn and Jayden Nelson scored for the Canadians. Habibullah’s goal came from the penalty spot. Canada also benefited from an own goal from Elijah Nava.
Canada reached the knockout portion of the tournament by finishing second to the U.S. in Group F with a 2-1-0 record. The Canadians defeated Guatemala 4-2 and Barbados 4-0 after losing 3-2 to the Americans.
Curacao (0-1-2) finished third in Group H.
Canada will play either Costa Rica or Nicaragua in Sunday’s quarterfinal. The four semifinalists will advance to the FIFA U17 World Cup.
Habibullah and Colyn are from the Vancouver Whitecaps academy. Nelsen is with the Toronto FC academy.
Canada failed to qualify for the 2017 and 2015 U17 World Cups. It has participated in six of the 17 editions of the tournament, but only twice since 1995 (in 2011 and 2013). It hosted in 1987.
