RIO DE JANEIRO – Flamengo midfielder Diego will undergo surgery for a left ankle fracture.
The Brazilian team says the former Porto, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Wolfsburg and Fenerbahce player will be operated on as soon as possible in Rio de Janeiro.
The 34-year-old Diego was injured in Flamengo’s 2-0 first-leg defeat against Emelec — in the Copa Libertadores Round of 16 match — after a tough tackle by defender Dixon Arroyo in the 70th minute.
Flamengo did not say for how long the midfielder will be out of action.
