HALIFAX – Winger Cory Bent, the top player chosen in the CPL-U Sports collegiate draft last November, has signed with HFX Wanderers FC.

The 22-year-old Bent, a native of Preston, England, scored 24 goals in 36 games for the Cape Breton University Capers. The Halifax-based Canadian Premier League team signed him after an impressive showing in training camp, which was cut short by the pandemic.

“I think the fans will love him,” coach Stephen Hart said in a statement. “He has that desire and passion for the game and fighting quality, so he has certainly looked the part.”

Bent becomes the club’s seventh international signing.

“It’s a feeling of relief and gratitude that through all the hard work I’ve now been able to achieve a dream of turning professional and I’m just grateful to represent the East Coast again,” Bent said.

After spending time at Preston North End’s academy, Bent was playing for Clitheroe FC in England’s Northern Premier League Division One North West when he was scouted by Capers coach Deano Morley.

Bent joins former Cape Breton teammate Peter Schaale at the Wanderers.

The Canadian Premier League season, originally slated to kick off April 11, is currently on hold.
