SYDNEY, Australia – Jean-Paul de Marigny will be replaced as head coach at Western Sydney Wanderers after just five games in charge at the Australian A-League club.
The Wanderers issued a three-sentence statement Monday announcing de Marigny’s departure but without giving reasons.
An announcement on the new coach is expected within days, with Wanderers chief executive John Tsatsimas saying “it is very important that we undergo these (changes) to ensure that we have a successful 2020-21 season and return back to where we belong.”
De Marigny was appointed head coach in July until the end of the 2020-21 season after a brief period as caretaker following Markus Babbel’s exit in January.
In seven matches as interim coach, de Marigny led the Wanderers to three wins and three draws. In five matches as head coach, the Wanderers won two games but placed ninth in the league and missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season.
Western Sydney won the Asian Champions League title in 2014, becoming the first Australian club to win the continental club championship.
An expanded 12-team A-League season is expected to kick off in December. Sydney FC won the 2019-20 title on Aug. 30 after a season that lasted 324 days and included a lengthy hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
