Former Liverpool coach Emma Humphries takes over Vancouver Whitecaps women’s program

VANCOUVER – The Vancouver Whitecaps have named Emma Humphries the club’s director of women’s football development.

The team said in a release Thursday that Humphries will provide technical leadership to the Whitecaps FC Girls Regional Excel Super Centre program and have a key role in identifying and developing select players.

She’ll also support the girls academy programs, provide coaching clinics and seminars, and lead a mentorship program for women coaching in the club’s academies across the country.

Humphries spent the last two years as an assistant coach for Liverpool FC of the FA Women’s Super League in England.

The New Zealand international previously spent five years with the Whitecaps as girls director and head coach from 2014-18.

Humphries is married to Bev Preistman, the coach of the Canadian national women’s team, and has worked with several Canadian players who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics this summer, including Julia Grosso, Jordyn Huitema and Jayde Riviere.

“It’s very exciting to return to Whitecaps FC and play such an important role in driving player and coach development,” Humphries said in a statement. “I am proud to work with a professional club that has a clear focus on providing the best opportunities for aspiring players and women in their coaching careers.”
