Bisons star forward banned for playoff match

The University of Manitoba women’s soccer team will be hosting a Canada West conference post-season game for the first time in program history Saturday but it will be without the services of star forward Bianca Cavalcanti.

Cavalcanti, who was red-carded for an altercation during the handshake line following Sunday’s 2-0 loss to the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary, will be suspended for Saturday’s four-vs.-five play-in match against the Regina Cougars at IG Field.

Game time is 5:30 p.m.

Manitoba Bison Bianca Cavalcanti, who was red-carded for an altercation during the handshake line following Sunday’s 2-0 loss to the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary, will be suspended for Saturday’s four-vs.-five play-in match against the Regina Cougars at IG Field.

The U of M hoped to have the red card overturned but learned Thursday the appeal had been denied.

Cavalcanti has nine goals on the year, one off the school’s single-season record, held by Karli Colpitts since 2007.

Cavalcanti’s 18 career goals are tied for fourth all-time with Colpitts.

Saturday’s home playoff game is part of a busy day at IG Field with the Manitoba football team hosting the Alberta Golden Bears in an important Canada West regular-season matchup at 1 p.m.
